"I practice because it's my holy place where I can lay down my heart and soul. It is my quiet space between my breath and my body. Where I am free. Where I am immersed in the infinite. I am raw, I am humbled but also replenished and restored. I practice because it breaks my heart so open so that love can shine through and I can share it with you"
My name is Geraldine Bartolata, I am a 500-Hour registered yoga teacher who began practicing yoga 3.5 years ago. It followed a couple of years of running marathons and training to become a tri-athlete. However, I experienced a really nasty road accident when I was hit by a drunken motor-cyclist. I incurred injuries that changed my perspective towards my outlook on life and sport. During the two years that followed and a couple of operations in hospital I slowed down and found Yoga. At first, as a simple alternative which enabled me to workout.
I was born and raised in Bohol, one of the 7,100 islands in the Philippines. Having an educational background in Business Administration & Marketing, I worked abroad for a number of years with several corporate jobs. Eventually, I felt the need to go back to my homeland.
I did not realise at the time that it would open my path to Yoga. After a year of home practice I took a 50hr Yoga Foundation Course. That deepened my practice and my understanding of what Yoga is all about. I continued my training and became qualified as a 200hr RYT . I then started to teach. I love learning myself and pledged to be a student forever. My passion and love for yoga grows perpetually. Earlier this year, I completely immersed myself in a 350HR Yoga Teacher training course and gained that qualification.
What started as a physical workout turned into a way of life.
I am a firm believer in leading a healthy lifestyle and exploring my inner self. My roots as an Ashtanga Vinyasa practitioner allowed me to explore my strength and flexibility whilst gaining true awareness of breathing correctly. I gain great joy from helping others realise their own potential, by empowering people to find happiness, deep connection to their inner self and healing through the practice of yoga. My goal is to create a community of yogis and cultivate an environment where students can communicate openly, admit their struggles, celebrate their accomplishments, feel proud of who they are both on and off the mat.
I believe there is so much ‘growth’ in all of us, which can be discovered from the mental and physical practice of yoga. Yoga poses give the person a chance to access the spiritual through the physical. A sanctuary where one listens to their mind and body. When their capacity to listen is at its greatest and most refined, they can listen directly to their soul and seek its constant guidance.
As to the physical, I believe yoga can begin at any age, for anybody. Each sequence is unique with the ability to speak as an individual. My classes focus on commitment to breathing, moving with awareness, finding my students own best alignment, joining them on their personal yoga journey and bringing each student to their ‘edge’. I introduce into the practice a reverence of the mystery of life. I encourage all students to practice with spontaneity and an open mind by stepping into the unknown.
However, regardless of your experience, I will safely guide you through the sequence, suggesting modifications that welcome all bodies onto the mat.
The course focused on proper alignment, techniques and the understanding of the basic principles of yoga. We delved into the study of yoga asana and philosophy. Upon the completion of the course, it enabled me to begin a safe home yoga practice.
The 25 days intensive training is based on the Ashtanga Primary Series, combined with the creative sequencing approach used in Vinyasa Yoga. We use the practice of the Ashtanga Primary series to build a strong foundation. We, then dig deep our understanding of the functional anatomy, breath work, meditation, and the energetic elements within each pose. From that strong technical foundation, we were able to create our own Vinyasa - style class, harnessed by our creativity & inner voice.
At the end of the course, It enabled me to confidently teach a modified Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga class suitable for all levels and offer modifications for students with injuries or physical limitations.
